Lips that Stick – LipSense Review

For those of you who know me, know that I rarely wear make-up. I was never the kid to beg their parents to be allowed to wear make-up to school. In fact, I actually used to HATE having to wear lipstick for horse shows – it was a constant battle with my mother. Why would I want to put something on that is going to just wipe right off? I am hear to tell you that with age, I occasionally wear makeup. And by makeup, I mean minimal touch of eyeshadow and mascara. In the attempts to be more ‘professional’ and ‘put together at work’, I have started to explore this whole makeup thing. With the attempts to find an everyday lip product that lasts all day AND night I was referred to LipSense. I immediately dismissed it. Could there really be such a thing where you apply it once in the morning and just be done with it? Well, read on because I have a secret to share with you! (beware, this is a LONG, but detailed post)

What exactly is Lipsense?

The premier product for SeneGence®, LipSense is a patented, amazing departure from conventional lipsticks and lip colors. LipSense is versatile in that you can mix shades to create a number of effects.

  • Unique product is waterproof and does not kiss off, smear off, rub off, or budge off!
  • Does not dry out your lips – it works to restore the moisture content
  • Color lasts anywhere between 4 and 18 hours

Don’t worry, like me, you’re probably a bit skeptical as to the actual longevity of such a product. You and I both have tried our “long wear” lip colors, but to no avail have never found something that truly lasts. Well, I am here to tell you, I am now a firm believer in LipSense. I have been trying this product for a good 7 months now and have been pleasantly surprised. As a caveat, everyone is different so there is no one product that can be universally successful, but further down, I will share a few tips & tricks I have found to help push LipSense into a more successful bucket than even on its own.

The first time you purchase LipSense, your representative will recommend that you buy the starter kit, which contains a LipSense color of your choice, Glossy Gloss and Oops Remover for a total of $55 USD.  Most likely, your representative will add you to a Facebook group or send you photos showing all of the colors on ACTUAL people with varying skin tones to get the best idea as to how it will look on YOU! (which I think is totally awesome rather than having to look through swatches). Best part is LipSense is 100% guaranteed – don’t like the color? Exchange it for another; how can you go wrong with that?!

Application

Here comes the real difference between LipSense and other lip ‘stain’ products. Application! It is something that I am still trying to master, but helpful videos like Brianna’s definitely help. The key is patience, which I have very little of.

  • First step (this is key), starting with clean, dry lips (more on prep ideas down below in the tips & tricks section).
  • Shake the tube of color
  • Wipe off any and all excess product from the applicator (almost like there is nothing left on it)
  • Apply in ONE SMOOTH MOTION (this is where my unsteady hands fail me!) from one corner of your lip to the other (do NOT sweep the applicator back and forth); repeat this process for your other lip (I like to start with my bottom lip, but it does not affect the application process for whichever you choose)
  • Don’t let your lips touch! It is very important to keep your lips taught throughout the whole process to allow
the bonding to activate. Allow the color to dry – it should take 5-10 seconds – then repeat the process to apply the second layer of color. You will apply 3 layers; this is where you can get creative and mix the colors throughout the la
yering process to create your own perfect ‘shade’. Let dry completely, but still don’t let your lips touch!
  • Apply your gloss! Glossy Gloss is recommended when you first start using LipSense as it’s the most moisturizing though there are plenty of other options to choose from to perfect your favorite look. During this application process, you can sweep the applicator back and forth and then rub your lips together (you’ve been very good at resisting this temptation up until now 😉 ).

Wear

Although the LipSense color is meant to last, your gloss is not. It protects your color and therefore, WILL need to be reapplied through the day just as any other lip product. While, LipSense notes that the color lasts anywhere from 4 to 18 hours, I have found that this varies based on what I am doing, eating and the weather. With that said, on average, I would say that the color lasts me 8-10 hours, which I am perfectly happy with. However, some girls I have talked with say the color lasts them 12-14 hours! It is recommended that you reapply the gloss before eating your meals, as it provides an additional barrier to help prevent oils in your food from breaking down the color (greasy foods work the hardest to cause the color to wear off). I have found that the amount of times you need to reapply the gloss also is determined by the condition of your lips. I have always suffered from dry & cracking lips, due largely from dehydration (I am awful about remember to push fluids); I have since found ways to help keep them smooth and soft.

Removal

So, I will be honest, I have never used the Oops remover so cannot give a review on this step. What I have used as a remover is coconut oil! I just rub a dab all over my lips then scrub/wipe off the color with a warm wash cloth – it works perfectly fine for me and even moisturizes my lips in the process. Others have noted things such as Ponds Cold Cream – allowing a small amount to sit on your lips and then wipe with a damp wash cloth. I recommend trial and error, like the amount of time the color lasts, this too depends on each individual user as to what will work the best.

General Tips & Tricks

  • Exfoliation stage: When you first start using LipSense, your lips are going to go through a shedding process – don’t
fear, this is normal. While using LipSense, you will want to stop using all other lip products, such as most chapsticks. This is because they contain ingredients such as wax, which causes a buildup on your lips which needs to be ‘shed’ in order to allow the molecular bond between the color and your lips to occur. Until you have finished your exfoliation stage, the lip color may not last as long and will most likely flake off after a few hours as it is bonding to the wax instead of your lips.
  • Burning Sensation: LipSense color contains SD Alcohol 40-B, which is “used as a delivery system for the color technology; creates a germ and bacteria-free environment.” With this, as it contains alcohol, it may cause a slight burning/tingling sensation during application depending on the condition of your lips. This feeling lasts only a few moments and for me, has subsided after the exfoliation stage completed.
  • Lip Moisturizer: In addition to none-wax lip balms, you can use coconut oil or even the Glossy Gloss to moisturize your lips when not wearing the color or when you go to bed as an overnight lip balm. It is very important to keep hydrated and your lips moisturized in order for the best wear.
  • Lip Scrub
  • Longevity of a Tube: it is said, that one tube of LipSense is equivalent to 4 tubes of standard lipstick. As I cannot remember any time where I used a tube of lipstick in its entirety before losing it, I cannot attest to how long either a tube of lipstick or LipSense actually lasts!

Overall Thoughts

Overall, I am super happy that I took the leap and purchased LipSense. I will admit, at the beginning there were moments of uncertainty, especially during the ‘exfoliation’ stage. However, through the encouragement of my distributor, I stuck it out. I knew that if I could get my lips to a healthy stage, that my lips would not only feel better, but it would give this product a real shot! And I am so glad I did. Did I mention that there are over 70 colors currently available???? If you are interested in purchasing LipSense products, feel free to shoot me a message here!
